1907 graduate Tenishev College, Saint St. Petersburg. Studied ancient French language and lit at Saint St. Petersburg University.
1909 joined circle of poets who contributed to journal “Appolon”. 1910 first work published. 1912 joined Acmeist movement, of which he became one of the foremost proponents.
1916 began introducing lyrical elements into his poetry. 1918-1921 worked in various cultural and educational establishments and spent some time in the Crimea and Georgia 1922 moved to Moscow.
Took and independent stand in the conflicts of local lit groups. 1934 arrested by People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs but later released. 1938 arrested again.
