Otani established the Matsushiro Trading Company and engaged in silk reeling. Fearing that the deteriorating quality of Japanese raw silk might destroy its reputation abroad, he went to Milan, Italy, and sold Japanese silkworm eggs of good quality. They were favorably received in the Italian market.
