While engaging in his family occupation, he cultivated haiku poetry of the Danrin school, which was originated by Soin Nishiyama. His haiku was characterized by wit and urbaneness. Traveled widely in Japan. When he met Ryota Qshima at Matsushima near Sendai, he was so impressed by Oshima's haiku that he became his disciple on the spot. His books, Haizange and Haikai-bukuro, give many sidelights on his poetry as well as how haiku poets of his time fared.
His family operated a courier service agency for generations.
