Yamada Otozō was born on November 6, 1881 in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. His former name: Otozo Ichikawa.
Yamada Otozō graduated from the 14th class of the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1903. He also graduated from Military Staff College in 1912.
Yamada Otozō promoted to Lieutenant General in 1934, and served as director of Military Staff College, Commander-in-Chief of the 12th Division and Commander-in-Chief of the 3rd Army Manchuria. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Japanese Forces in Central China in 1939. The same year he was promoted to full general. Later Yamada became Inspector-General of Military Education and Commander-in-Chief of the Kwangtung Army. He was taken prisoner by the Soviet Army in 1945 and imprisoned in Soviet Russia. Repatriated to Japan in 1956.
