Otto Gail was born on July 18, 1896, in Gunzenhausen, Bavaria, Germany.
Otto Gail received his education at the Technical University of Munich. He learned electrical engineering and physics.
Otto Gail authored the novels and non-fiction books about physics, astronomy and space travel. He contributed to newspapers and radio programs and produced science fiction stories to attract the attention of the youth to the subject.
His ‘Romping through Physics’, originally published in German in 1931, was translated and released for an English-speaking audience in 1933. This volume and his nonfiction work ‘With Rocket Ships into Space’ show his close association with rocket scientists, including Hermann Oberth and Max Valier.
Gail seemed to understand what a huge undertaking space travel would be, and in ‘The Shot into Infinity’ published in 1925 he wrote of several possible methods of space exploration.
Otto Gail’s highly detailed and realistic science fiction stories about space had an important impact on early American utopian literature.
The number of his works were translated into English. His ‘Hans Hardts Mondfahrt’ (‘By Rocket to the Moon’) was also published in French. The book was compared to the writings of Jules Verne.
