(He wrote the angry story of the 1930's with a submachine ...)
He wrote the angry story of the 1930's with a submachine gun. No jail could hold him. No bank could keep him out. No town was safe from his unbridled violence. To a bitter nation, trapped in the Depression, John Dillinger became a hero, a Robin Hood who made the bankers bleed. It wasn't really true. It was just a legend. But Dillinger gloried in that legend...tried to live up to it... and finally died for it, betrayed and ambushed in an alley by a regiment of cops.

(Everything--everyone he touched turned rotten. That was t...)
Everything--everyone he touched turned rotten. That was the knack of Charles "Lucky" Luciano, the most evil man to ever walk the streets of New York. As a member of the Mafia, he had unlimited opportunities to exercise his vicious nature. Murder by murder, rape by rape, he established the biggest network of vice and corruption ever to blight the city of New York.

(The night Jimmy Fratianno became a government witness, no...)
The night Jimmy Fratianno became a government witness, not a single Mafia boss slept. As a “made guy” in La Cosa Nostra, Jimmy Fratianno knew their best-kept secrets. A soldier, capo, and ex-boss of the Los Angeles family, involved at the highest levels with bookmaking, gambling, union racketeering, extortion, pornography, and virtually every criminal activity to which organized crime is linked, Fratianno also earned the reputation as the Mafla’s top killer in California. Fratianno became the highest-ranking Mafloso ever to “turn,” and in the past two years his testimony, in courtrooms across the nation, has been making sensational headlines. A veteran investigative reporter and bestselling author, Ovid Demaris had the unprecedented opportunity to debrief Fratianno in order to write this book. Demaris also had access to wiretaps, surveillance reports, prison and court records, The result is the most important work to date on organized crime in America---a disturbing, yet extraordinary and vivid life story that makes the other “insider” stories of the Mafia look like tales of innocence. The Last Mafioso details eleven murders Fratianno was personally involved in, and relates Fratianno’s inside knowledge of some two dozen others, including the slayings of Bugsy Siegel, Nick DeJohn, Albert Anastasia, Jimmy Hoffa, Sam Giancana, Johnny Roselli, and Tamara Rand. Fratianno was a confidant of Johnny Roselli, so Demaris tells the real story of Operation Mongoose, the CIA-Mafia plot to assassinate Castro. Here also are the behind-the-scenes deals and machinations of the Mafia in Las Vegas.

(The Green Felt Jungle is the first book that dares to pen...)
The Green Felt Jungle is the first book that dares to penetrate the mirage of Las Vegas, the respectable, fun-loving resort where carefree tourists may innocently and legally indulge in gambling. In a carefully documented exposé (which includes some astounding, secretly taped confidential conversations), the authors explore the real Las Vegas-a clever (and profitable) front for organized crime. Everything is legal, of course-everything except mysterious, unreported murders, systematic tax evasion, widespread prostitution, tacit segregation, and the graft that greases the entire system. Why was Bugsy Siegel, the founder of modern Las Vegas, liquidated? Who are some of Frank Sinatra's sinister partners in the Sands Hotel? How large is Jimmy Hoffa's interest in the glittering hotels along the Strip? Guess who some of Senator Barry Goldwater's companions have been on his numerous gambling junkets. And why was the body of a United States Senator who died just before election day preserved in a bathtub full of ice until all the returns were in? Citing irrefutable evidence, the authors expose the ways in which some of the nation's top criminals, under the pretense of operating "legitimate" businesses, are actually pouring millions of tourist-trade dollars into the coffers of the Mafia. They name the hidden interests who really control the casinos and disclose the hypocrisy and corruption that surround public officials on virtually every level of government. Also explained in detail are the tourist's actual chances of coming away a winner, the various "house percentages," the subtle devices used to lure players to the tables-and keep them there. Ironically, the gambling equipment is possibly the only thing in Las Vegas that is really on the level.
