Ozunu En no is also known as En no Gyoja or En no Ubasoku. He was born in 634 and according to the Sholcu Nihongi, he lived on Mt. Katsuragi in the province of Yamato and was famous as a possessor of magical powers.
He was accused of deluding and leading men astray and in 699 was exiled to the island of Oshima off Izu Peninsula.
In later ages a great number of legends became associated with his name. Since the Kamakura period, when Shugendb,—the sect of Buddhism devoted to religious practices in mountain areas—became firmly established, he has been honored as the founder of the sect.
He had a disciple named Karakuni - no-muraji Hirotari and was said to have been able to command the gods to draw water and gather firewood for him.
