Educated locally and at Sekondi Methodist Schools between 1931 and 1940, getting a middle school leaving certificate. He enlisted in the West African Air Corps in 1940. This “colonial" air force service unit was disbanded after the war and in 1947 he joined the political administration in the Western Region, going to London in 1952 to study as a chartered secretary and technical teacher.
This experience fitted him as a training officer with the establishment secretariat in Accra. But, in 1960, when President Nkrumah reconstituted his air force, he rejoined the service. He became commanding officer of the Air Force Station Accra and later Adjutant General, then Director-General of administration of the Ghana armed forces. Finally at the time of the coup, he was Military Secretary, holding the rank of colonel.
