PREFACE. :. An addition of knowledge ON Holy Ireland: —These were the first words of Gilla-na-Neeve O'Heeren, when he undertook to complete the description of Ireland which his predecessor, John O'Dugan, had left unfinished; and they form a very suitable motto for the hook I now offer to the notice of the public. For this book completes the work that was only half accomplished by the first Volume of "The Origin and History of Irish Names of Places." When I first took in hand to write a book on Irish Local Names, I thought I coidd grasp the whole subject in a single volume; and in the attempt to do so, I compressed as much matter into thc First Volume as any readable boolc of the size could conyenfently bold. I found, bowevcr, after it was written, that I bad used little more tban balf my materials, and tbat tbere were many things requiring elucidation, which I had not been able so much as to glance at. The first book was received favourably, mucb more so, indeed, tban I bad ever dared to anticipate; and tbis encouraged me to continue tbe work, Tbe result is tbe present volume; and I earnestly hope it may be found as worthy of public favour as its predecessor. These two volumes comprise what I have to say concerning Irish Local iS^ames; for I have noticed all jthe principal circumstances tbat were taken advantage of by the people of this country to designate places; and I have explained and illustrated, as far as lay in my power, the various laws of name-formation, and aU the important root-words used in building up tbe structure. ....

Studied at private schools and at home. Master of Arts; Doctor of Laws.
Entered service of Commissioners of National Education, Ireland, 1845. Held successive posts till 1874, when he was appointed Professor, and subsequently Principal of the Commissioners’ Training College, Dublin. Retired 1893; one of the Commissioners for the publication of the Ancient Laws of Ireland.
