Excerpt from Concise Dictionary of Proper Names and Notable Matters in the Works of Dante This Concise Dante Dictionary, based upon my Dictionary of Proper Names and Notable Matters in the Works of Dante, which, originally published in 1898, has now for some time been out of print, is offered to students and readers of Dante as a convenient hand-book, and companion to the Oxford edition of the complete works of Dante. The articles have been carefully revised, and, it is hoped, brought up to date, throughout. A certain number of new articles have been added, comprising the names of persons and places mentioned in the tenzone, or poetical correspondence, between Dante and Forese Donati (which was included for the first time in the third edition of the Oxford Dante), and in the Latin poems addressed to Dante by Giovanni del Virgilio, On the other hand, the names which occur in the canzone, 'O patria, degna di trionfal fama' (Canz. XVIII in the Oxford Dante), have been omitted, it having, been established that this poem is not by Dante. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(In this Dante Dictionary I have made an attempt to bring ...)
In this Dante Dictionary I have made an attempt to bring together, in a convenient and concise form, such information as is available concerning the various persons and places mentioned or referred to in the works of Dante (i. e. in theD ivina Commedia the Canzoniere the Vita Nuova, the Convivio, theD eV ulgari Eloquentia, theD eM onarchia, theE pistolae, theE clogae, and the Quaestio de Aqua et Terra, as printed in theO xford Dante ). I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to present the results of the most recent researches. This has been, in not a few cases, a matter of some difficulty, owing to the fact that a great many of the numerous articles on Dantesque subjects published in Italy make their appearance in more or less ephemeral periodicals. For this reason I have been obliged occasionally to accept my information at second hand, through the medium of one or other of the special Dante publications, such as the Giornale DantescO ythe Bullettino deltaS ocictct Dantesca I taliana and the like. I am not sanguine enough to suppose that I have succeeded in every instance in bringing my articles wholly up to date .I nextenuation of any shortcomings in this respect I can only plead the wide extent of the field which has had to be explored, and the quel dA damo ,as Dante puts it, I incarco della carne dA damo ,beneath which the energies of even the most ardent explorers will sometimes flag. A few kindred subjects have been included with the proper names, such as the denominations of the several classes of sinners, c., and of the various heavens, c., mentioned in theD ivina Conimedia (e. g. A ccidiosi, I pocriti, Traditori; Cielo Stellato, Rosa Celestiale); certain personifications and titles (e. g. A quila, Pellicano; A rchimandrita, Savio); the titles of books quoted by Dante (e. g. A eaels, Etbica, De Reglmine Princlpum); and so on .T utte leO pere diD ant (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)

( One of the most frequently cited texts on Dante's life ...)
One of the most frequently cited texts on Dante's life and writings, this invaluable study illuminates the Divine Comedy as well as the great Florentine poet's other works. Author Paget Toynbee was the most influential Dantean scholar of his era, and this, his most widely known work, presents an exceptional account of one of the pivotal thinkers of the early Italian Renaissance. Toynbee's meticulous attention to detail and clear analysis offer a concise account of Dante's world. Besides being a valuable reference for scholars, the book also serves as a gateway to the past for anyone interested in history or literature. Toynbee's study opens with historical background on thirteenth-century Florence, which comes alive with the rivalry between the two political parties, the Guelfs and the Ghibellines. It traces the poet's birth and ancestry; his youth, education, and military service; and his private and public life, from his condemnation and exile to his death and subsequent fame. Anecdotes about Dante's personality and character by Boccaccio and other contemporaries enliven the book, which concludes with an exploration of the Vita Nuova, the Convivio, and the Divine Comedy, as well as Dante's Latin works.
