He was assistant at the university of Helsinki 1959-1965 and associate professor 1962-1967. Tommila was professor in Finlands history at the University of Turku 1965-1976 and professor in Finlands history at Helsinki University 1976-1994. Tommila has focused on Finnish history, foremost its political history in the 19th century, urban and journalistic history, and also historiography.
His father is Eero Tommila, professor for chemistry at Helsinki University.
Membership
He is an Academician, a member of the Academy of Finland since 2004.
