Pankaj Tripathi is an Indian actor who is known for his natural acting. He made his debut in 2004 with a minor role in Run and Omkara, and has since worked in more than 40 films and 60 television and web shows.
Background
Pankaj Tripathi was born on September 5, 1976, in Belsand, a town in Gopalganj district, in the Indian State of Bihar, to Pandit Banaras Tripathi and Hemwanti Devi. His father works as a farmer and priest. He also has three elder brothers and two younger sisters.
Tripathi was not aware of films untill the 10th standard because of not having a TV, and the nearest theatre was around 20 km away from his village. During festive seasons, he used to play the role of a girl in his village's natak which according to him was appreciated by the villagers and ultimately prompted him to make a career out of acting.
Education
Tripathi studied at the D. P. H School in Gopalganj, Bihar, and then went to the National School of Drama in Dehli, graduating in drama in 2004. He also did a course in Hotel Management and worked as a Cook for two years at Hotel Maurya in Patna.
Tripathi was an active student leader at his college in Patna and was an eloquent speaker too. He was also good at sports and represented his college in High Jump and 100-meter-sprint.
After graduating from the National School of Drama, Tripathi came to Mumbai in 2004 and did an uncredited role in the film Run. However it was eight years later in 2012 that he made his breakthrough, when he was widely praised for his role in Gangs of Wasseypur. His audition for film went on for about eight hours. In 2008, he acted in the Bahubali TV series, and later in Powder on Sony TV which is now currently available on Netflix. In his early career, he played mostly negative roles and became synonymous with gangster characters. Later he played various roles and won critical appraisal for the same. His first film as a lead actor was the 2017 film Gurgaon. His 2017 film Newton was India's official entry for the Academy Award in best foreign film category.
Tripathi made his debut in Tamil cinema with the film Kaala which was released on June 7, 2018, and also appeared in six more films including Angrezi Mein Kehte Hain, Stree, and Yours Truly. In 2019 he has already appeared in Luka Chuppi and The Tashkent Files. His upcoming films include Kissebaaz, which is to be released on June 14, 2019, Drive, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, Super 30, and Dhaka. In 2020 he will appear in Kargil Girl, Ajmeri Baba, and Angrezi Medium.
Pankaj Tripathi is known today as a popular actor who is praised for his roles in Indian films and television and web shows. No matter how small the role is, Tripathi's performance is always a delight to watch for the audience, because he always stays true to his craft.
He received a Special Mention at the National Film Awards, the News18 REEL Movie Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2019 Power Brands honored him with “Power Brand: Industry Trendsetter” at BFJA (Bollywood Film Journalist’s Awards).
