1886-1890 studied at Saint St. Petersburg University.
1890 expelled from university for participation in student political movement, arrested and banished from Saint St. Petersburg. 1895 re-arrested; 1897 exiled to Siberia. 1898 met Lenin in exile.
One of 17 signatories to Lenin’s “Russian Social-Democraties’ protests Against the Economists’ ‘Creed”. 1900 completed term of exile and on Lenin’s instructions settled in Pskov, organizing and distributing newspaper “Iskra”. 1902 member, Organization(s) Committee to Convene 2nd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress.
Arrested and exiled to Siberia. 1903 fled to Switzerland. 1905 helped prepare 3rd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress.
1905-1907 revol work in Yekaterinoslav and Saint St. Petersburg. 1907-1909 taught mathematics at secondary school in Orsh. 1909 again arrested; then worked for Statistics Bureau, Moscow Province Administrator
During WVV 1 took defeatist stand. Setive in 1917 February Revol. After 1917 October Revol headed Department of School Reform, People's Commissariat of Education.

1918 helped found first experimental model commune school in village Litvinovichi, Mogilev Province, which served as the basis for Moscow’s Lepeshinskiy Experimental Model Commune School. 1919-1920 Turkastani Republic Deputy People's Commissar of Education. 1921 returned to Moscow and helped found Commision to Study and Collate Material on the History of the October Revol and the Communist Party: co-founder, International Organization(s) for Aid to Revol Fighters.
1925-1927 chairman, Central Committee, International Organization(s) for Aid to Revol Fighters. 1927-1930 director, Historical Museum. 1931-1934 director, Research Institute, People's Commissariat of Foreign Trade.
1935-1936 director, Museum of the Revol. From 1936 pensioner; deleg at 14th- 17th Party Congresses and 15th- 17th Party Conferences.
