Career
Pre-debut
As a child, Joy was heavily interested in trot music In grade school, she performed K-rock band Cherry Filter"s Ori Nalda (Korean ready reckoner, "Flying Duck") which began her aspiration to become a singer. In 2012, she auditioned and was cast by South.M. Entertainment at the South.M. Global Audition in Seoul.
She was given a stage name by a vocal coach who derived "Joy" from its literal English meaning to represent her usual cheerful disposition.
2014–present: Debut with Red Velvet and solo activities
The group made their music debut with the digital single "Happiness" on August 1, 2014. Since debut, Red Velvet has experienced notable success and recognition.
After releasing two mediocre-success singles in 2014, their follow-up extended play, studio album, and four singles in 2015 have accumulated over 100,000 album sales and 3.2 million downloads according to Gaon. Music Core and Inkigayo.
The album would go on to become the best selling album by a girl group in South of Korea on the Hanteo Chart for the first half of 2015.
She received significant recognition for her participation in the popular television program and featured in her first solo pictorial in Korean fashion magazine CéCi, concurrent to modeling for Etude House cosmetics.
