He completed his Bachelor (Honours) in Political Science at Presidency College, Calcutta and Doctor of Philosophy in the same subject at the University of Rochester.

He is a multi-disciplinary scholar, with special emphasis on political science, anthropology and history. He was the Professor of Political Science and served as a Director of the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta and is currently a Professor (Honourary) of the CSSSC and Professor of Anthropology and South Asian Studies at Columbia University in New New York He is a Joint-Editor of Baromash, a biannual Bengali literary journal published from Calcutta.
In addition to numerous books in English, he has published books of essays in Bengali.
