Was permitted to enter the naval service of Turkey, 1870, and assisted the late Hobart Pasha in the reorganisation of the Turkish fleet. Organised the torpedo and coast-defence services, and commanded them for several years.
Surveyed and buoyed the Dardanelles and its approaches.
