McCutcheon was born and raised in the small New South Wales farming town of Narromine.

He was educated at Saint Joseph"s College in Sydney, and he played in the Australian Schoolboys Rugby team in 2005.
He plays for the New South Wales Waratahs in the Super Rugby competition, and his usual position is loose forward. McCutcheon played for the Australian Under 19 team in 2006, and was selected for the Australian sevens team in 2007. McCutcheon made his debut for the Waratahs against the New Zealand Super 14 rugby team, the Otago Highlanders, in the 2010 Super 14 rugby season, as a flanker.

He was appointed as captain of the Australian Sevens team for the 2009/10 Institutional Review Board Series. McCutcheon toured Hong Kong and Europe with the Wallabies at the end of 2010, but did not play a Test.
In 2012, he broke his ankle in round three of Super Rugby, playing for the Waratahs against the Highlanders in Dunedin, ending his season.
