McEvedy attended Street Patrick"s, Wellington, from 1895 to 1898, before going to Guy"s Hospital in London to train as a doctor.

He has the unique distinction of being on two British Lions tours, but never actually being capped for any nation. He toured New Zealand in 1904 with David Bedell-Sivright"s British team and again in 1908 with the Anglo-Welsh team He later returned to Wellington and was Wellington Rugby Football Union President 1931-1933 and NZRFU President 1934-1935.
