Patrick Hanks was born on March 24, 1940, in the United Kingdom.
Patrick Hanks studied at the University College, Oxford, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961 and a Master of Arts degree in 1979. He also attended Masaryk University where he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Patrick Hanks started his career as a chief editor of English dictionaries at HarperCollins Publishers Ltd in 1971. He held this post until 1979. In 1983, Hanks became a project manager at the University of Birmingham and worked there until 1987. He then returned to his post of a chief editor of English dictionaries at HarperCollins Publishers Ltd. From 1990 to 2000, Hanks served as chief editor of current English dictionaries at Oxford University Press. Hanks was the joint principal investigator of the HECTOR project at the Systems Research Center of Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in Palo Alto, California. The results of this project served as a basis for the New Oxford Dictionary of English.
Patrick Hanks also worked as an adjunct professor of computational lexicography at Brandeis University in Waltham. He was a consultant and visiting scientist to the Collocations Project and Electronic Dictionary of the German Language (DWDS) at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. He worked as a senior research associate at the Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University from 2005 to 2009. Later he returned to England in order to continue his research in the Bristol Centre for Linguistics in the University of the West of England. Now he is working as a Professor in Lexicography at the Research Institute of Information and Language Processing (RIILP) in the University of Wolverhampton. Patrick Hanks is editor in chief of the Dictionary of American Family Names, Dictionary of Surnames and Dictionary of First Names. He is the author of many papers on lexical analysis, lexicography, onomastics.
