(This book tells the incredible story of 'Top of the Pops'...)
This book tells the incredible story of 'Top of the Pops'. It is not just the story of a long-running television programme. The story of 'Top of the Pops' is the story of British popular music. It is a shadow history of British rock & roll, and beyond. It is the story of how a 6-week show turned into a pan-global phenomenon and how for 40 years, 'Top of the Pops' was a British institution. With a span of nearly half a century, there are so many highlights: The Beatles only live appearance, in 1966, promoting Paperback Writer... the Who getting banned... the first colour edition in 1969... David Bowie's breakthrough performance of Starman in 1972... Nirvana's chaotic 1991 appearance promoting Smells Like Teen Spirit... the Blur versus Oasis battle... Justin Timberlake playing bass with the Flaming Lips in 2003... 'Top Of The Pops II' was launched in 1994, bringing the programme to a whole new audience.

Patrick was employed as a ‘hip young gunslinger’ by New Musical Express, and he has been writing about music ever since. In 1985 Humphries and Chris Hunt wrote Bruce Springsteen: Blinded by the Light. Filled with newspaper clips, magazine covers, and posters of Springsteen, the book is intended for the Boss’s fans. Humphries provides a Springsteen biography in the book’s first section, and Hunt documents the musician’s recordings and media appearances in the second. Bruce Springsteen: Blinded by the Light is “a thorough and enjoyable biography,” wrote Susan Rice in the Voice of Youth Advocates. “This career compendium is calculated to dazzle any Springsteen fan,” asserted a Publishers Weekly reviewer.
In The Boy in the Bubble: A Biography of Paul Simon, Humphries writes about another famous American singer and songwriter, Paul Simon. Using a variety of secondary sources, he explores Simon’s collaboration with Art Garfunkel, his solo career, and the recording of Simon’s controversial album Graceland in South Africa. Other musicians and businesspeople had refused to deal with South Africa because of its government’s racist apartheid policies. While Listener contributor Pete Atkin faulted Humphries for not providing any new information, Atkin did acknowledge that “the arguments surrounding the political controversy are fully laid out in the closing chapters.” The American edition of the biography was published as Paul Simon: Still Crazy After All These Years in 1989. While Quill & Quire contributor Paul Stuewe called the book “a strikingly inept piece of work,” Library Journal contributor David M. Turkalo deemed it to be “a breezy yet complete biography.”
Humphries collaborated with John Bauldie to write Absolutely Dylan: An Illustrated Biography. They discuss American singer and songwriter Bob Dylan's life and his influence on popular music. This large-format book contains an extensive list of Dylan’s recordings as well as several photographs. “The text is not the book’s strongest point,” wrote John Rosser in Kliatt, who nonetheless noted that “there is a lot of research behind this book.” This book was also published as Oh No! Not Another Bob Dylan Book.
With the complete cooperation of the artist, Humphries wrote Richard Thompson: Strange Affair. Richard Thompson: Strange Affair “offers genuine insight into Thompson’s music and a revealing examination of the enigmatic performer’s life,” wrote Gordon Flagg in Booklist.
Humphries’s Nick Drake: The Biography is the first biography to focus on the life and death of British singer and songwriter Nick Drake. Drake only released three albums before his death at the age of twenty-six from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. Even though Drake died in 1974, his albums continue to influence other musicians. Humphries sheds some light on Drake’s life and career through interviews with friends, colleagues, and musicians who had worked with him. According to a Publishers Weekly reviewer: “Although unable to solve the mystery of his death, Humphries does manage to make the singer seem more human.”
