Leonard enlisted at Camp Three Forks, Idaho Territory, and was stationed there during the late 1860s and early 1870s. By the time of his death, he had been promoted to sergeant, as can be seen on his gravestone. Leonard died on March 1, 1905 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Lansing, Kansas.
Until 1984, it was believed that Leonard was a double recipient of the Medal of Honor. However, another Irishman, Patrick James Leonard had also received the Medal of Honor. His actions as a corporal at Grace Creek near Fort Hartsuff, Nebraska on April 28, 1876 lead to him being awarded the Medal of Honor on August 26, 1876.
