He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Surgery (1997), Mechanical Engineering (1998), and Doctor of Philosophy (2002).

He works in the area of coastal impacts due to extreme natural events. He taught at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University from 2002-2010, and spent a fellowship year at Princeton University in 2011. He is the Secretary of the Coastal Engineering Research Council and is the Editor of the Coastal Engineering Proceedings.
He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010.
