He worked as a staff writer for the Los Angeles Weekly for six years (2007-2013), and following the success of his New York Times Best-Seller, "The Mayor," has chosen to become a full-time author McDonald co-wrote "The Mayor: How I Turned Around Los Angeles after Riots, an Earthquake, and the OJ Simpson Murder Trial" with the former Los Angeles Mayor, Richard Riordan. McDonald holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Fordham University and an Master of Arts from New York University in journalism.
He is currently writing a book about a major Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome organization and pursuing other projects in television, film, and magazine publishing.
McDonald also regularly blogs for the Los Angeles Weekly and writes a column about gay issues called "Queer Town.".
