Shen"s first work on a documentary was with We Served with Pride: The Chinese American Experience in World World War II, a film about the Chinese American involvement in World World War World War II In 2003, he released the critically acclaimed Flight From Death, a documentary about death anxiety, inspired by the works and writings of cultural anthropologist and social theorist Ernest Becker. Shen"s latest work, The Philosopher Kings, is a documentary about the wisdom gained by janitorial workers in prestigious universities.
