Patrick Stewart is a British actor. Stewart spent more than 30 years performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and is known to TV audiences for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. His later role as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise took his career to great heights. His extensive Broadway credits include A Christmas Carol, The Tempest, Macbeth and the 2013 repertory mounting of No Man’s Land.
Background
Ethnicity:
Patrick Stewart is of English, with some amount of Scottish, descent.
Patrick Stewart was born on July 13, 1940, in Mirfield, England, the United Kingdom, to Gladys (née Barrowclough) and Alfred Stewart. Patrick is the youngest of three brothers. His father was a Regimental Sergeant Major in the British Army, and his mother a worker in a local mill. Patrick didn’t meet his father, Alfred until he returned from service in World War II.
Patrick grew up in the industrial town of Mirfield close to Leeds, which borders the moors of Yorkshire not far from Haworth where the Bronte sisters lived. Stewart grew up in a fraught environment where he had to watch violence meted out against his mother, and that has, in turn, made him a fierce advocate for victims of abuse.
Education
From an early age, Patrick Stewart's love of Shakespeare and classic literature grew from his older brothers reading to him from what few books they had in the house. He was educated at Crowlees Church of England Junior and Infants School and later at Mirfield Secondary Modern School. As he moved on to school this love of literature was strengthened by his English teacher Cecil Dormand who also encouraged his interest in theatre.
To escape some of the unhappy aspects of his childhood, the young Patrick found comfort and happiness in the local amateur dramatic groups, and by the age of 12, he was offered a place on an eight-day drama course thanks to his English teacher.
This proved to be the foundation of his desire to be a professional actor, and it was here that Patrick first met Ruth Wynn Owen and Rafael Shelly, an actress and drama teacher who were to be very influential in his life. Following the course, he did increasingly more amateur dramatics and continued to do so after leaving school at 15.
After seeking advice from his friends and mentors from the drama course, Patrick auditioned for the prestigious Bristol Old Vic theatre school and was accepted. In the meantime, he worked as a furniture salesman earning money to help pay for the acting fees. For the next two years, he learned the skills of acting and finally managed to lose his Yorkshire accent to replace it with the mellifluous tones we hear today.
Stewart performed in playhouses around England before making his London theatrical debut in 1966. The following year he joined the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, and he made his first Broadway appearance in 1971, as Snout in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Despite taking small roles in American and British films and on television beginning in 1973, Stewart remained primarily a stage actor for the first quarter-century of his career. It wasn't until the 1980s that Patrick began to work in film and television. Some of his first attempts included popular films like Excalibur (1981) and Dune (1984).
Although he was well-known, his fame would be nothing compared to what a sci-fi television series had in store for him. In 1987, he was chosen to play Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Following veteran Star Trek actor William Shatner into the captaincy of the starship Enterprise, arguably the most famous spaceship in popular culture, Stewart’s Picard quickly stepped out of the long shadow of Shatner’s Captain Kirk. Although it was a surprising choice for a “serious” actor, the role brought Stewart an unprecedented level of fame. His cultured voice and natural gravitas lent great credence to the role and made him the urbane and deeply moral center of TNG. Certain that he would be fired from the series, Patrick reportedly refused to unpack his bags for six weeks. The show was a hit, and Patrick stayed with Next Generation for seven seasons. After the show ended, Patrick reprised his role for a string of successful Star Trek films: Star Trek Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996) and Star Trek: Insurrection (1998). A follow-up TV series, Star Trek: Picard, debuted in 2020.
In addition, Patrick continued to work on the stage and in various films. In 1995, he had a hilarious turn as a flamboyant, acid-tongued interior decorator in Jeffrey, while in 1997, he tried his hand at intrigue with a part in The Conspiracy Theory. The following year, he appeared again on the small screen, giving a terrific portrayal of the obsessive Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. On stage, Stewart enjoyed acclaim for a number of productions, particularly A Christmas Carol, which he performed both on Broadway and the London Stage, winning a 1993 New York Theatre Critics Drama Desk Award and a 1994 Olivier Award. He also earned extensive praise for his portrayal of Prospero in the 1996 Broadway production of The Tempest.
In 2000, Patrick decided to start off the millennium off with a bang, landing a role in the big-budget sci-fi/fantasy film, X-Men. He played the telepathic, paraplegic leader, Professor Charles Xavier, of the mutant team, reprising the role in X2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). More recently, he lent his voice to the animated film Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return (2014) and even returned to the X-Men franchise with the 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past.
After starring as a choreographer who is interrogated by a graduate student and her husband in the film Match (2014), Stewart assumed the role of a dissipated newscaster in the television comedy series Blunt Talk (2015–16). He appeared in the ensemble holiday comedy Christmas Eve and oozed menace as the leader of a group of white supremacists in the thriller Green Room (both 2015). Stewart later assumed the role of legendary wizard Merlin in The Kid Who Would Be King (2019), a contemporary take on the Arthurian legend. Having used his perfect British diction to comedic effect in cartoon TV shows, he also lent his voice to the animated movies Gnomeo & Juliet (2011), Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (2013), and The Emoji Movie (2017).
Despite these on-screen successes, Stewart continued to act on the stage, and he never stopped performing Shakespeare. In the 1990s he played Prospero in The Tempest and the title role in an innovative take on Othello. In 2008 Stewart’s masterful performance of the title role in Shakespeare’s Macbeth brought unexpected freshness to the play. The production, which started in London and later moved to Broadway, was set in a claustrophobic Stalinist Soviet Union, which seemed well suited to the play’s atmosphere of paranoiac treachery. Stewart won raves - and a Tony Award nomination - for his rich realization of the central character. Later in 2008, he took on the role of Claudius in Hamlet, for which he received his third Laurence Olivier Award. The following year Stewart earned praise as Vladimir in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. His costar was McKellen, and the duo reprised their roles on Broadway for a double-bill production (2013-2014) that also included Harold Pinter’s play No Man’s Land. In 2016 Stewart and McKellen starred in a London staging of the latter play.
Most recently, he played Bosley in the reboot, Charlie's Angels (2019), directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska.
Patrick Stewart is an atheist - but "believes in energies." His spouse Sunny Ozell said: "We are both atheists but we definitely believe in energies and trying to leave with a positive vibe."
Politics
Patrick Stewart is a longtime supporter and member of the British Labour Party. The actor has been vocal in his opposition to Brexit and described Brexit as "the grimmest thing" to have happened to him in his political life.
Stewart said he was going to apply for American citizenship in order to oppose the Trump administration. He said: "I think we have our own Trump in our country here today, so I am going to be using my vote to try and get rid of him."
Views
Because his father was abusive towards his mother, Stewart is now an advocate for women's rights. He works with Amnesty International and the United Kingdom domestic abuse charity Refuge to raise awareness. His goal is to let victims know that the abuse can be survived.
He has publicly advocated the right to assisted suicide and identifies himself as a feminist. Stewart is a patron of Humanists UK.
Quotations:
"I would like to see us get this place right first before we have the arrogance to put significantly flawed civilizations out onto other planets, even though they may be utterly uninhabited."
"Writing is the strength of any project. If the script isn't good, then you'll be doing a cellophane job from day one, patching it up, trying to cover all the holes."
"All I know is that I have to act. It's a compulsion. I'm driven to it. I wouldn't say that I would die if it were taken away from me, but a large part of me would shrivel up."
"Reinforcing human rights is the way to reinforce security."
Personality
When he was nominated to complete the Ice Bucket Challenge (which involves filming yourself having a bucket of ice tipped over you or pay a forfeit to charity), Stewart released a wordless video in which he wrote out a cheque, then took two ice cubes from a bucket, put them in a glass of whiskey, and toasted the camera.
When asked about his worst habits, Stewart was quick to admit that it was "slurping when I drink… anything."
Although Stewart doesn't have a middle name, he used the middle name "Hewes" professionally for a while in the 1980s.
Physical Characteristics:
Patrick Stewart lost all of his hair at age 18 and thought that no woman would ever be interested in him again.
