Paul received master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Copenhagen and another doctorate from Corpus Christi College at Cambridge University, graduating in 1943.
After graduation from Corpus Christi College in 1943, Christophersen took a job with the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, but returned to Denmark three years later to chair the English department at his alma mater - the University of Copenhagen. He remained in Copenhagen till 1948, when he began an international career of English teacher. Paul served at the faculties of the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, the University of Oslo in Norway, the New University of Ulster in Northern Ireland and the University of Doha in Qatar.
In addition, Paul wrote and contributed to several books during his career, including "An English Phonetics Course" and Second-Language Learning: Myth and Reality", which was translated into Japanese in 1984.
Also, as a young graduate of Copenhagen University, Christophersen assisted Otto Jespersen with the preparation of one of the volumes of the latter's Modern English Grammar.
