Danna was born and raised in Saint Louis, Missouri.

He graduated from the University of Michigan, and was awarded an internship with the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies. He earned his Master of Architecture degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and while a graduate student he was awarded the James Templeton Kelly Prize.
Upon completion of his degree, Danna was also awarded the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) Traveling Fellowship for design excellence. He was a principle of DMJM Design of Los Angeles from 1994 and architect of the proposed Research and Development headquarters in Santa Monica (2003). Buildings attributed to Danna include the Los Angeles Police Department Headquarters building (by Architecture, Engineering, Consultancy, Operations & Maintenance, 2009).
