Paul Gustave Doré was born on January 6, 1832 in Strasbourg, France. From the early age of four he showed a marked artistic talent, and by the time he was 11 he was experimenting with lithography.

Nowhere but in the Bible were dramatic textual material and the artistry of Gustave Doré more perfectly matched. Here are the original eight stories from the 1697 volume Contes de temps passé by the great Charles Perrault (16281703) in a translation that retains the charming and unsentimental simplicity that has won Perrault a permanent position in French literature. These were among the earliest versions of some of our most familiar fairy tales ("Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Puss in Boots," and "Tom Thumb") and are still among the few classic re-tellings of these perennial stories. Paul Doré came to Paris to study in 1847.
In 1848 Gustave Doré came to Paris and secured a three years’ engagement on the Journal pour Rire.
In the late 1840s and early 1850s, he made several text comics, like Les Travaux d'Hercule (1847), Trois artistes incompris et mécontents (1851), Les Dés-agréments dun voyage d'agrément (1851) and L'Histoire de la Sainte Russie (1854). In 1853, Doré was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. In the 1860s he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, have become so famous that they have influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical "look" of the two characters.
Doré's illustrations for the Bible (1866) were a great success, and in 1867 Doré had a major exhibition of his work in London. This exhibition led to the foundation of the Doré Gallery in Bond Street, London.
Doré's later work included illustrations for new editions of Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Milton's Paradise Lost, Tennyson's Idylls of the King, The Works of Thomas Hood, and The Divine Comedy. Doré's work also appeared in the weekly newspaper The Illustrated London News.
He painted also many large and ambitious compositions of a religious or historical character and made some success as a sculptor, his statue of Alexandre Dumas in Paris is perhaps his best-known work in this line.
The government of France made him a Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur in 1861.
