Elbogen began to work in the 1920s as a reader for Rikola Verlag, Vienna, and then became a chief editor of the magazine Moderne Welt in Vienna. He came to the United States during the 1930s, and served as a writer and technical adviser from 1941 to 1955 for a number of major motion picture studios, including Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Universal-International, Paramount and Columbia.
Elbogen also worked as a freelance writer and editor from 1941. During his career he edited four anthologies and published two novels, one book of essays and a collection of anthologies, including Liebste Mutter (1929, as editor; translated into English in 1942 as Dearest Mother: Letters from Famous Sons to Their Mothers, Verlassene Frauen (1933); Kometen des Geldes (1933); Dram (1949; translated in 1953 as The Jealous Mistress); Der Dunkelslern (1960); and his final book, the anthology Genius im Werden (1963, as editor).
