Joined 2nd West India Regiment from Sandhurst, 1886. Served two years in West Indies and West Africa. Transferred 1889 to 21st Hussars, now 21st E. of I. Lancers.
Assistant Provost-Marshal, Cavalry Div., South Africa, 1899- 1904 (despatches thrice, brevet Lieutenant-Colonel, medal with 3 clasps). Decorated: also in 1895 received Royal HumaneSoc. certificate forgoing off Li (fey embankment and saving drowning man. Victoria Cross, 1898; Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, 1902; Special Service in Somaliland since 1904; Captain 21st Empress of India Lancers; Aide-de-camp to the King, 1907.

Racing, polo, hunting, shooting. Headed the list of Gentlemen Riders in India, 1893-1895, and in Egypt since 1896. Has played in regimental polo team for last ten years, and done a good deal of big game shooting and hunting.
