Based on the original show, that launched Pee-wee Herman into an American pop culture icon, Paul Reubens' beloved quirky character brings his Playhouse to life once more.
Paul Reubens is an American actor, comedian and writer. He has appeared in many feature films and television programs. Paul is perhaps best known in the persona of his character and pseudonym, Pee-wee Herman.
Besides, Paul is a film producer and game show host.
Background
Paul Reubens was born Paul Rubenfeld on August 27, 1952 in Peekskill, New York, United States. He grew up in Sarasota, where his parents owned a lamp store. His mother, Judy (Rosen) Rubenfeld, was a teacher, and his father, Milton Rubenfeld, was an automobile salesperson and one of the founding pilots of the Israeli Air Force during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Paul has two younger siblings - Luke, a dog trainer, and Abby, an attorney and a board member of the American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee.
Education
Paul Reubens attended Sarasota High School. After graduation, he was accepted into Northwestern University's summer program for gifted high-school students, where he joined the local Asolo Theater and Players of Sarasota Theater. Later, he attended Boston University, and, at that time, began auditioning for acting schools. He was turned down by several schools, including Juilliard and Carnegie-Mellon, before being accepted at the California Institute of the Arts.
After graduation from Boston University, Reubens decided to seek his fortune in Hollywood. He accepted a string of jobs, ranging from pizza chef to Fuller Brush salesman in California.
In the mid-1970's, Paul got small roles in theater productions, appeared at gigs at local comedy clubs and was a guest on The Gong Show (1976). Later, Reubens joined the comedy troupe The Groundlings and began his career as a comedian and actor of improvisational theater. In 1982, Reubens created a series about a character he had been developing for the past few years. The show was called The Pee-wee Herman Show and ran for five months. Pee-wee became an instant cult figure and, for the next decade, Reubens would be fully committed to his character, making all of his public appearances and interviews as Pee-wee. After this character appeared on several television variety shows, Reubens co-wrote a 1985 film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Its sequel, Big Top Pee-wee, appeared in 1988. Between 1986 and 1990, Reubens played the role of Pee-wee on CBS on Saturday mornings in a children's show, called Pee-wee's Playhouse.
By 1991, feeling he had "done it," Reubens cancelled his CBS series despite the network's request for another season. Pee-wee's Playhouse was showing the re-runs of its final season on CBS, when the actor was arrested for indecent exposure inside a pornographic movie theater in Sarasota, Florida. Even though Reubens denied the allegations, CBS responded by taking the remaining re-runs for the season off the air, and toy merchandisers pulled Pee-wee Herman dolls from store shelves. In addition, jokes were coined on talk shows and in the media, relating to the incident. Many of Reubens' fellow celebrities, however, felt he was being unjustly penalized for a one-time error in judgment. Though Reubens cut down on his television and film appearances, he did appear as Pee-wee on the Music Television Video Awards.
Since then, Reubens has shelved Pee-wee Herman character. He has appeared in several feature films, including Batman Returns, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Duns ton Checks In, Matilda and Buddy. Reubens did a well-received recurring guest role on the television series, Murphy Brown.
In August 2009, Reubens announced the return of The Pee-wee Herman Show. On November 1, 2010, Reubens was a special guest star on a WWE Raw episode as Pee-wee.
In 2015, Netflix acquired the rights to produce a new Pee-wee film, entitled Pee-wee's Big Holiday with Apatow and Reubens, producing the film, John Lee directing and Reubens and Paul Rust writing the screenplay. The film was released on March 18, 2016 on Netflix.
Paul Reubens is widely voted to be one of the best comedians. His Pee-wee character became an instant cult figure, earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame by 1989. Paul built a Pee-wee franchise, with toys, clothes and other items, generating more than $25 million in 1988. In 2007, TV Guide named Pee-wee's Playhouse one of the top 10 TV cult classics of all time. Reubens is also a recipient of numerous awards, among which are the OFTA Television Award, BTVA People's Choice Voice Acting Award and Daytime Emmy Award.

Paul's most famous character is Pee-wee Herman, a funny man-child of indeterminate age and sexuality, who created a sarcastic enthusiasm for the popular culture of the 1950's and 1960's. The geeky character's wardrobe consisted of a gray suit, a white short-sleeved shirt, accessorized with a red clip-on bow tie, and white patent-leather loafers. He wore his jet-black hair military short with a defiant tuft in front and he accentuated his lily-white complexion with pink cheeks and red lipstick. Reubens drew inspiration for Pee-wee's geeky behavior from youth he had attended summer camp with and derived his creation's boyish voice from a character he played as a child actor.
Quotations:
"I probably have become more infamous from two misdemeanors than probably anyone I could think of."
"The moment, that I realized my name was going to be said in the same sentence as children and sex, that's really intense. That's something I knew from that very moment, whatever happens past that point, something's out there in the air, that is really bad."
"But I don't know. Pee-wee just kind of popped out one day, pretty much fully fleshed-out and fully formed."
"The public may think I'm weird. They may think I'm crazy or anything, that anyone wants to think about me. That's all fine. As long as one of the things you're not thinking about me is that I'm a pedophile. Because that's not true."
"I think my entire career path was determined for me, when I was 6 years old, watching reruns of "I Love Lucy" on TV and thinking about making people laugh."
"I've always felt like a kid, and I still feel like a kid, and I've never had any problem, tapping into my childhood, and my kid side."
"The public already knows about me more than I ever wanted it to know."
