Thompson was originally drafted in the third round of the 1983 National Basketball Association Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 1985, Thompson was traded to the Milwaukee Buckinghamshire for two draft picks. Later in the year, he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers after being waived by the Buckinghamshire.
