Valentino was Guadelupean delegate to the French Provisional Consultative Assembly organized under General Charles De Gaulle in the latter part ot the war. He was deputy to the two constitutional assemblies of 1945 and 1946. Thereafter, he served as Socialist deputy in the National Assembly tor the next 15 years. He was also mayor of Pointe-à-Pitre from 1946 until 1959, when the Socialists were defeated by a coalition organized by the Communists. In the mid-1960s he led a split of the Guadeloupean Socialists with the French party.
