Studied at Kiev University.
In 1870’s sided with Populists. 1874 went abroad, contributed to newspaper Rabotnik and helped edit journal Obshchina. 1879 returned to Russia.
After the split in the Zemlya i volya (Land and Freedom) movement joined the Chyornyy peredel (Black Rcdivision) faction. 1880 emigrated to Switzerland. 1880-1882 worked for Volume(s)'noye Slovo.
1883 helped found the Osvobozhdeniye truda (Liberation of Labor) group. 1900 joined ed staff of the newspaper Iskra. 1903 after the 2nd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress became a Menshevik leader.
Ideological founder of ’’liquidationism”. Active in the 2nd International. Attended the Zimmerwald and the Kienthal Party Conferences.
During World War 1 sided with the centralists. 1917 member, Executive Committee, Petrograd Soviet. Actively supported the Provisional Government.
After 1917 October Revol went abroad.
