Artemyev rose from political officer during the civil war to chief of the Operational Directorate of Troops of the NKVD in 1941. Promoted to general lieutenant in June 1941 and to general colonel the next year, Artemyev headed the Moscow MD 1941-47. He then took the higher courses at the Military Academy of the GS, returned to his former post in 1949, and was banished in June 1953, after Beria's fall, to the Ural MD as deputy commander. He rose to first deputy commander before disappearing from public view in 1960.
