1884 met Lev Tolstoy, adopted and preached his doctrine of ’’non-resistance to evil”. Worked for publ houses in Russia and abroad, including Posrednik Press. 1893 together with Tolstoy organized famine relief in Samara Province.
1897 exiled to Kurland Province for signing the "Help” appeal prepared by V. Chertkov to protect the Dukhobor section From 1898 lived mostly abroad, where he met Lenin.
