Graduated from Kiev University, 1907.
Member of the SR Party, 1903-1917. Lecturer in psychology at Moscow University, 1913. After the revolution, organized the Academy of Social Education, 1919-1931.
Founder of pedology (childrens’ psychology) in the USSR, which was very influential in the 1920s and early 1930s, taking the place of traditional pedagogy. Stressing the scientific approach, pedologists collected a lot of factual data, which reflected the chaos and misery of the social conditions of Soviet children. In July 1936 pedology was declared an antiMarxist science and banned.
Arrested with many of his colleagues and perished in the Gulag. Later partly rehabilitated. Some of his psychological works were republished in the 1960s.
