Became a worker. Participated in the 1905 Revolution. Sailor in the Baltic Navy, 1910. Bolshevik agitator, one of the leaders of the sailors’ detachments which were the main force behind the Bolsheviks in 1917.

In his memoirs, published in the late 1950s in Moscow, told how on 5 September 1918 he personally shot Dora Kaplan, the SR who made an attempt on Lenin’s 1'fe, thus ending some long-standing doubts about her fate.
