From 1933 professor, Leningrad Mining Institute. Studied seismic activity in Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Developed new type of seismograph for recording close-range earth tremors.
Devised methods for studying deep structure of earth’s crust and made first study of elastic waves caused by powerful explosions. Designed gravitational variometers.
