Background
Pavel Matveevich Svobodin was born on December 14, 1850 in Saint Petersburg City, Russian Federation. He was the illegitimate son of apprentice Martin Wolf and the daughter of a serf, a poor tradesman Larisa Filippovna Kozienko.

Pavel Matveevich graduated from the Saint Petersburg Theater School (1871, the course of P.A. Karatygin, P.V. Vasiliev).
Career
Until 1884, Pavel Matveevich performed under the name Matyushin. In 1871- 1884 he worked in the theaters of Samara, Simbirsk, Tambov, Orel, Kazan, Saratov, Moscow. In the years 1872-1875 he repeatedly toured the city of Voronezh. Among the roles of a different period: Profit, Love Butts, Lucky ("The Last Victim", "Poverty is not a vice", "Forest" by Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky), "Plyushkin" ("Dead Souls" by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol) and others. Since 1884, an artist of the Alexandrinsky Theater in Saint Petersburgs.
