(In all of her roles - athlete, wife, mother, role model, ...)
In all of her roles - athlete, wife, mother, role model, and cancer survivor - Olympic gold medalist Peggy Fleming has relied upon the discipline she cultivated as a young skater. Now in this intimate memoir, she eloquently reveals her fascinating life story and shares her secrets to serenity and success.
Peggy Gale Fleming is an American former professional figure skater, skating commentator and author. She won an Olympics Gold Medal in Figure Skating at Grenoble, France, in 1968.
Background
Peggy Gale Fleming was born on July 27, 1948 in San Jose, California, United States. She is a daughter of Albert Eugene Fleming, a newspaper journalist, and Doris Elizabeth Fleming. Peggy has three sisters: Janice, Maxine, and Cathy Fleming.
Education
In the beginning of 1966, Peggy Gale Fleming attended Colorado College.
Peggy Grace Fleming began ice skating when she was nine years old and became serious about being a competitive figure skater when she was eleven. Her coach was William Kipp. He died in 1961 when the entire United States world figure skating team and coaches were killed in a plane crash on the way to the world figure skating championships. At the 1968 Olympics, Fleming was coached by Carlo Fassi who was also the coach of 1976 Olympic Figure Skating Champion, Dorothy Hamill.
Before moving to Colorado Springs, she was coached by John A.W. Nicks who took on many of William Kipp's students after the 1961 plane crash that took the lives of the United States figure skating team and their coaches. Her unusual style led to five United States titles, three World titles and the gold medal in the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France.
After retiring from amateur competitive figure skating in 1968, Fleming skated as a guest star with Ice Follies. She also appeared in television specials and performed in front of four different United States Presidents. After retiring from amateur competitive figure skating in 1968, Fleming skated as a guest star with Ice Follies. She also appeared in television specials and performed in front of four different United States Presidents. Since 1981, she has been a skating commentator for ABC Sports.
She was featured in numerous television specials, including "Here's Peggy Fleming" (1968, which also featured legendary dancer Gene Kelly) "Fire on Ice: Champions of American Figure Skating" (2001), "Christmas on Ice" (1990), "Skates of Gold" (1994) and "A Skater's Tribute to Broadway" (1998). Her 1971 television special "Peggy Fleming at Sun Valley," which included an appearance by Olympic skier Jean-Claude Killy, won Emmy awards for director Sterling Johnson and cinematographer Bob Collins. In 1983, she shared a co-starring role with Toller Cranston and Robin Cousins in Radio City Music Hall’s "Ice," a theatrical dance spectacle of three dozen skaters and a 45-piece orchestra.
She and her husband owned and ran the Fleming Jenkins Vineyards and Winery in California. The winery produced close to 2,000 cases of wine a year with names as "Choreography" a Bordeaux style blend from Napa Valley and a "Victories Rose" from the San Francisco Bay Syrah. Profits from the "Victories Rosé" went towards charities that supported research towards breast cancer. The winery was closed in 2011.
Peggy Gale Fleming has had a long-term impact on the sport of skating and is known for her combination of style and athletic ability. While she was active, she was known for her seemingly effortless performances, combining balletic grace with the era's most difficult leaps.
In 1994 she was featured in Sports Illustrated as one of the world's most important athletes of the day. She was invited to the White House twice. In 1980, she was the first skater ever invited to perform at the White House, and her appearances and performances inspired generations of United States women skaters. Fleming holds five United States titles, three world titles, Olympic gold medal. She was enducted into United States Olympic Hall of Fame.
