Career
Early in life he moved to Alabama and then to Marshall, Henderson County, Texas, where he studied law and served in the state legislature in 1857. He was a Democrat and an intense foe of the Know-Nothings. Murrah practiced law and was a political opponent of Sam Houston.
He supported secession. When the Civil War began, he volunteered for service in the Confederate Army. During the early part of the war, Murrah was a colonel in a Texas brigade and saw service on the frontier.
In 1863, he was elected governor of Texas by a large majority. His administration was marked by conflict with Confederate authorities and disagreement with local Confederate military commanders, such as his argument with General John B. Magruder over the Conscription Act. In the closing days of the war, he made an independent effort to make favorable peace terms forTexans.
Shortly after the war, he called for a state constitutional convention in hopes of reorganizing the government. But he was branded a traitor by the federal authorities and was forced to flee to Mexico before it convened.

"Peculiar institution" of slavery was not only expedient but also ordained by God and upheld in Holy Scripture.
Politics
Stands for preserving slavery, states' rights, and political liberty for whites. Every individual state is sovereign, even to the point of secession.
