Background
Lord, Penny was born on September 23, 1928 in New York City. Daughter of Richard and Lillian Macaluso.

Pontmain is a small village on the borderline between the Normandy and Brittany sections of France. It is very small, situated between Fougeres and Mont St. Michel, which is on the Normandy Coast. The first time we visited Our Lady of Hope, in the summer, offshore breezes from the English Channel provided refreshing cool air to the area, as a relief from the summer heat. But when we returned in the winter, the soft, cool breezes had turned to cold, howling winds, bringing icy weather to the entire area, and through our insulated jackets. The local inhabitants choose to stay indoors by the fireplace, during these times, to protect themselves from being chilled to the bone by the gusty winds. The winter of 1871 was such a time. January was an especially brutal time for man and beast. Those who could avoid it, did not venture out into the weather. But unfortunately, not everybody could stay at home.

(In 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe came on Tepeyac Hill and i...)
In 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe came on Tepeyac Hill and identified Herself as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Almost one hundred years later, we find that these Indians, too, had a devotion to Our Lady, with their hearts centered on a statue they referred to as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. It is believed that most likely the statue was brought from Spain, years before, by a Franciscan Friar. The statue's humble beginnings were in a Chapel covered by a zacate (grass) covered roof. The tiny Chapel measured little more than twelve by fifty feet. The custodians of the image were an old Indian couple, Pedro Antes and his seventy-eight year old wife Ana Lucia. Ana Lucia was the object of much gossip and ridicule, because of her many stories about the messages she was receiving from the Blessed Mother or as she called Her, La Virgencita. But strangely enough, the Inquisition, which, at that time, was very scrupulous about investigating any superstitious practices or alleged apparitions, left Ana Lucia alone, crediting her conversations with the Blessed Mother as mere hallucinations of a senile old woman. Unloved, ignored, all but forgotten, the little image was removed from its alcove over the Altar and relegated to a dark corner of the sacristy. The little image remained alone and discarded, except for the ongoing loyalty of Ana Lucia, who would gently dust off her little statue, and speak to her, as if she was real. No one else had a place for her in their hearts. But this was soon to change.

(It was the year 1447 and all of Italy was being attacked ...)
It was the year 1447 and all of Italy was being attacked by a new enemy - the plague. The casualties surpassed the numbers lost in any war. The citizens of Italy were dying by the thousands, as the pestilence spread from city to city and village to village. No one was safe! The plague was nearing Macerata's borders, when the citizens of the town decided to call a Town Council meeting. They knew that only the intercession of the Mother of God could save them. It was decided they would turn to Our Lady of Mercy and as part of their supplications to Her, build a Chapel in Her honor in 24 hours. So, the Town Council actually made this decree! The Feast of the Assumption, August 15th was chosen as the day construction would start and finish. Everyone in the town participated in the endeavor - strong and weak, young and old, men and women, children, all pitched in to build this church dedicated to their Mother Mary, believing She would hear their prayers and answer them. People of great faith, they worked as if the favor had already been granted. The nobility rolled up their sleeves and worked beside their servants. Peasants, members of the Town Council, clergy, religious, all carried supplies to the construction site of the little church. It was not a work of desperation, as one might think, but a joyous occasion, with music and food and wine - all rubbing elbows together with one goal - one heart, one mind, one spirit. In twenty-four hours, the little Chapel was completed. The town had honored their Mother! And what did Our Lady do? Our Lady of Mercy came through! As a reward for Her children's faith, She intervened with Her Son, and a wall of protection encircled the city. The enemy's army of infection and deadly disease was halted practically at their gates, and the town was spared from the ravages of the plague.

(The people of Lithuania have holy stubbornness. The holy ...)
The people of Lithuania have holy stubbornness. The holy stubbornness that made them resist the one True Faith, would be the same holy stubbornness that would keep them Catholic, in the face of great danger. That is, the people at large, not those princes who had special interests and wanted to steal the lands and churches from the Church. The Sixteenth Century had arrived and with it division and devastation. This brings us to Siluva, 1608, where we find a small village in a remote part of central Lithuania, filled with poor farms and poorer farmers to tend their meager crops. Part of their problems was they not only had to battle the soil which was terribly sandy, they had to fight their crops, which refused to grow in the barren silt. The only things that grew prolifically were pine trees. From them, they would derive their name. In Lithuanian, a pine forest is called a Silas. Therefore the townspeople named their town Siluva. If we remember our Church History, Our Lady always comes to inaccessible, distant, suffering places, filled with a people rich in piety but poor in resources. In Siluva what little they had was soon to be taken from them. If you want to break the back of a people take away their faith, their beliefs. And so, it would be with the suffering souls of Lithuania and Siluva.

(We follow Mother Mary on a journey again to a far-off pla...)
We follow Mother Mary on a journey again to a far-off place, high up in the mountains, where no one would consider going. We have never really paid much attention to what towns are located where in Japan, other than Tokyo, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. In looking on a map, we find Akita to be a thriving metropolis, in the north of the country, with a population of about 300,000 people, a lot more than you would consider for a small town in the mountains of Japan. But there was a reason for Our Lady to go there in 1973. And there was a reason She came to a Sister in the community of the Handmaids of the Eucharist. Their charism has been to adore Our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. Eucharistic Adoration and reverence for the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist form the spearhead of their community. Our Lady could trust this Sister and her community with the message She was to give her. And so we follow the Angels, as they set out to bring the Queen of the World gently down to earth once more, to this mountain hamlet, in a small country on the other side of the world, so that She can speak to us there, and here, and all over the world. June 12, 1973 - Akita, Japan It was a quiet Tuesday afternoon in the Convent of the Handmaids of the Eucharist, high up on the Yuzawadai hill, outside the mountain town of Akita, Japan. The Sisters had all gone off on errands, and had left Sister Agnes Sasagawa to watch over the convent. This was an important opportunity for Sister Agnes. She was given a responsibility, which she took very seriously. But in truth, the other Sisters didn't expect any activity which would require major decision-making of any kind, so leaving Sister Agnes alone there was fine.

(Mary’s appearance to 5 children in Beauraing, Belgium, in...)
Mary’s appearance to 5 children in Beauraing, Belgium, in November and December of 1932 has always fascinated us. There are so many aspects of the visit from Our Heavenly Lady that we don’t quite understand. But we know there was a need for Mary to come to our aid in this place at this time. Nothing is by coincidence with her. Every time she comes to us in an apparition, she has to upset the balance of nature, break through the dimension separating Heaven and earth, just to make contact with us. Then she has to condition the minds of the seers and us, the people for whom she comes to earth, to accept the supernatural, that which cannot be explained.

(March 25 was the Feast of the Annunciation. On this parti...)
March 25 was the Feast of the Annunciation. On this particular year, 1945, it fell on Palm Sunday. This is such an important season in our Church. But in those times, during the final days of the war, thoughts were not focused on Palm Sunday, or the Feast of the Annunciation, or even Easter, for that matter. Ida Peerdeman, the woman to whom Our Lady chose to come, called it a "hunger winter." Priests would visit private homes, rather than take a chance on Nazi retaliation for trying to perform religious ceremonies, like Masses, especially not in public places, like churches. On that day, Fr. Frehe, who had been Ida's spiritual director for many years, chose to visit Ida and her family, as he had done many times in the past. The sisters and the Priest sat in the drawing-room, speaking of many things. We would imagine the condition of the war was the major topic of discussion. It seemed that their prayers were being answered; the enemy was being trounced by the foreign allies. Whatever it was, the visionary stated that they were in "deep conversation." At a given point, Ida was distracted by a bright light emanating from a room, right outside the drawing room. She felt herself moving towards the light. Now remember, She had been involved in this conversation with her sisters and the Priest, and all of a sudden, she's just up and away, walking in the direction of the light, which only she can see. Where the wall of the room had been, a scene appeared before her. It was a sea of light, and what she described as "infinite depth." Ida described what happened next: "And out of the depth I suddenly saw a figure coming forward, a living figure, a female form. I saw Her standing to my left above me, dressed in a long, white garment and wearing a sash, very feminine. She was standing with Her arms lowered and the palms of Her hands turned outwards, towards me. As I looked, something strange came over me. I thought, 'It must be the Blessed virgin; it can't be otherwise.'"

(The tradition of the image of Our Lady of the Gate goes w...)
The tradition of the image of Our Lady of the Gate goes way back, to before the time it was placed in the Chapel above the gate. There are legends supporting, it came to Lithuania by way of Poland in the late Fourteenth Century, when a Polish princess married into a royal Lithuanian family. Her name was Jadwiga. Tradition tells that she was the first one to introduce Roman Catholic practices into what was then primarily an Orthodox country. The Lithuanians welcomed the great love that was projected by the princess for the Mother of God. Veneration to the image was accepted almost immediately. A great wall was built around the city of Vilnius to defend her from her enemies, of which there were many over the centuries. Above each of its nine gates, providing access to the city, an image of Our Lady was placed. Above the Eastern Gate was placed the image of Our Lady of the Dawn.

Lourdes is such a tribute to, and affirmation of, the love and care, the concern, patience, and attention that is showered on us by our Heavenly Family. It is also a magnificent prayer of faith the world has been given in the the desire of Our Sweet Mary, Bernadette’s Aquero (Dear One), to take care of our physical and spiritual needs. The natural question we are asked after we have visited Lourdes is, DID YOU SEE ANY MIRACLES, ANY CURES IN LOURDES? The account of the apparitions at Lourdes, France 1858.

(The visit of my Mary to earth on September 19, 1846 is us...)
The visit of my Mary to earth on September 19, 1846 is usually referred to as OUR LADY OF TEARS or OUR LADY WHO WEPT. We sometimes believe that the only reason she is not weeping all the time is because she has the Beatific Vision of her Magnificent Son to comfort her. There’s an expression, “You can’t get hurt if you don’t stick your chin out”. She always sticks her chin out. She is always being hurt. If we study the history of the world, in particular the 16th through the 19th centuries, we become alarmingly aware that we’ve hurt Mary very deeply. However, very seldom do we ever hear her complain about the outrages committed against her. During her apparition to St. Catherine Laboure, she cried because of the chastisement that would come to France, and to the Religious Orders.
