Per Albin Hansson was born on 28 October 1885 in Fosie, Sweden.
He began earning his livelihood as a grocery clerk. Hansson joined the youth section of the Social Democratic Party, where his abilities soon attracted attention.
In 1917 he was made editor of the Social Demokraten and the following year was elected a member of the Riksdag.
In 1920 he was minister of defense, and held the same post in 1921-1923 and 1924-1926.
From 1929 to 1932 he was a member of the Public Debt Administration; he then accepted the office of premier, which, with a brief interruption in 1936, he held until October 5, 1946, when he died. Hansson accepted the leadership of the Social Democrats after the death of Hjalmar Branting, and guided the party through the depression of the 1930's. The party pursued a policy of cautious reform, including moderate state ownership, state planning, a program of public works and public housing, and socialized medicine. Hansson was a proponent of Scandinavian cooperation and was partly responsible for the formation of the Oso Bloc of Baltic states. He urged disarmament and cooperation in the League of Nations from 1932 to 1939, but in 1939 began to prepare military defenses. Neutrality during World War II was a difficult course, but Hansson accepted the task with optimism and preserved Sweden intact, in spite of threatened Nazi invasions in 1941-1942 and frequent neutrality violations. A coalition cabinet was formed at the outbreak of war with Hansson as premier, and little was accomplished in domestic reform.
Hansson was the Prime Minister of Sweden about 40 years. During that time he involved a wide range of reforms, such as subsidised dental care, income-tested child allowances for invalidity pensioners and widows, maternity allowances through voluntary sickness insurance.
Also his 1935 law that introduced state subsidies for the construction of apartment houses for families with three of more children, combined with housing allowances for families with more than two children living in these houses.
