Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Not illustrated. 1882 Excerpt: ...and then to Conon; but Panof ka73 with justice replies that the dedications, although all by Samians, were by no means by the same persons, but by the members of factions bitterly opposed one to the other. The history of Samos, like that of nearly all Greek cities, is a continuous record of faction-fights between aristocratic and democratic parties, and of the alternate victories of each. Thus, while the popular faction poured adulation on Alcibiades and Conon, the wealthy faction heaped honours on Lysander. If we forget facts like these in our reading of Greek history, we shall greatly misunderstand it. The settlement of the island by Lysander, however, did not long last; for Conon, after his great victory over the Lacedsemonians at Cnidus, in b.c. 394, at once sailed to the island, expelled the Lacedsemonian harmost, and set up once more a democracy under Athenian protection. Coins Of Periods II., III. The coins which may be assigned to the two periods under discussion are numerous, and their classification offers considerable difficulty. We are, however, assisted by valuable landmarks, and the task is by no means hopeless. To the beginning of Period II. must belong, if it be Samian, or even if it was issued by Samian colonists in Sicily, the varieties of our Nbs. 1 and 2, coins of which we have already spoken. 1. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. (Perhaps the expected arrival of Ehodes students may thus ...)
Perhaps the expected arrival of Ehodes students may thus affect some teachers at Oxford. But apart from the Ehodes students, there are quite sufficient reasons why we should occasionally examine our ways; and these reasons especially apply to a place where the forces of conservatism, and the power of inertia, are so strong as they are at Oxford. The changes which have taken place abroad in university studies in the last quarter of a century are enormous. As is shown below, France and America have entirely changed their programmes. And at home we have a rising University of London, at present in nebular shape; a new University of Birmingham; there is the Welsh University; and apparently the Victoria University is about to divide itself. In all these the talk is of new schemes of work and fresh developments. Within the last few years Cambridge has recast her whole course of Classical (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1883 edition. Excerpt: ...type of a tetradrachm is a four-horse chariot, of a didrachm a horseman leading a second horse, of a drachm a horseman on one horse merely. We might at first be inclined to doubt the assertion that there are four horses to the chariots on Nos. 10, 34, 35, 36, and two horses on No. 11 of our plate. This introduces us to a curious convention practised in the depicting of chariots in Sicily. From early times until about B. c. 420 the artists who had to engrave a chariot indicated two horses clearly, and the remaining two merely by doubling the front outlines of the two already depicted. When a pair of animals only had to be represented, as in the case of the apene, No. 37, or the horseman with two horses, No. 11, only n. 37, n. one annual was fully drawn and the second indicated by a doubling of outline. Now and then an unusually bold artist, such as the engraver of the Demareteion, No. 32, broke through the convention, and tried to get in either the full number of animals, or at least one more than the usual number; but the old custom soon revived, and lasted even into the period of best art. The engraver who 1 01. 4. Tlns victory is given to B. C. 452. cut No. 37 could certainly easily have depicted a pair of mules if he had been disposed; so could the engraver of our pl. vi. No. 24, hut they preferred the established usage. Over the victorious chariot Victory sometimes soars like a bird, and sometimes runs with outspread wings. The latter of these attitudes seems the older and it admits of more variety. It is interesting to contrast the earliest n. 10,37. running Nike of our plate, No. 10, with the latest, No. 37. In No. 10 the Goddess hurries with swinging arms and stretched legs which are clearly seen through her chiton. She wears an over...

TlCE object of the present work is to try to call more general attention to the results of recent excavation in Greek lands. This object I have tried to express in the title chosen: it will of course be understood that theN ew Chapters are not the chapters of this book, but the chapters which have been opened to us atM ycenae, at Olympia, and in the other scenes of recent researches. The interest of these researches is many-sided: some people will be attracted by their mythologic, some by their artistic results, some by their bearing on ancient life and manners, and so forth. On their artistic aspects I have scarcely touched, this book being not primarily concerned with art My endeavour has been to set forth briefly, and, if possible, in a way tending to interest all Phil-hellenes, the gains which the excavations of the last twenty years have brought us in regard to our knowledge of Greek history, using the word history in the widest sense, as covering not only political events, but all sides of the activity of a nation. A bout half of the matter in this work has been printed before. The greater part of Chapters IV., VI., VII., VIII,, IX., XV.
