He represents the riding of Windsor—Tecumseh. He moved to Windsor, Ontario in 1975. He obtained a degree in political science from the University of Windsor.
He worked as a local reporter for Canadian Broadcasting Company in Windsor.
Hatfield was a city councillor for Windsor City Council and was chair of the Essex Region Conservation Authority. Hatfield was elected in a by-election on August 1, 2013.
He ran as the New Democratic candidate in the riding of Windsor—Tecumseh. He defeated Progressive Conservative candidate Robert De Verteuil by 10.544 votes.
He was re-elected in the 2014 provincial election defeating Liberal Jason Dupuis by 17,221 votes.
