Career

Veteran Latvian communist leader. Joined the SDs, 1902. Emigrated, 1908. Participated in the Zimmerwald conference, 1915.

Member of the Central Committee of the Latvian Social Democratic Party, 1917. Soviet Ambassador to Switzerland, 1918. Soviet Minister of Education in Latvia, 1919.

Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Comintern, 1919-1920. Soviet Ambassador to Finland, 1921. Deputy Ambassador to Britain, 1921-1925.

Chief of the Central Archives of the USSR and the RSFSR, 1932. Arrested, died in the Gulag.
