His family was of Polish origin. First collection of poems published in Moscow in 1908 (Molodost’). Emigrated, 1922. Lived in Germany, Czechoslovakia, Italy, and England.
Settled in Paris. Often visited Gorkii on Capri. Editor of the poetry section of Vozrozhdenie, Paris, and as such became a respected judge and mentor of young emigre poets. His 3rd volume of poetry under the title Evropeiskaia Noch’, which included Putem Zerna and TiazhelaiaLira, was published in Paris in 1927.
Wrote an excellent biography of Derzhavin (1931, Paris), and a collection of articles on his contemporaries, Nekropol', 1939. His blend of classicism and modernism was unique at a time when experiments were very much in vogue. His literary criticism belongs to the best in Russian 20thcentury writing.
Considered by Nabokov as the greatest modern Russian poet.
