Bolshevik since 1905, but opposed Lenin’s intolerance towards the Mensheviks. One of the first members of the Politburo, February 1917. Responsible for the nationalization of the banks after October 1917.
Chairman of the third Soviet peace delegation in 1918, signed the BrestLitovsk peace treaty with Germany. Political Commissar with the Red Army during the Civil War. People’s Commissar of Finance, 1921-1926.
Took part in the new opposition at the end of the 1920s. In charge of the oil industry, 1926-1929. Ambassador to Britain, 1929-1932.
In 1936, arrested, tried and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. Re-arrested, tried and shot.
