Attended Jefferson College, Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Studied art in Philadelphia, Italy, France, 1840-1843.
Illustrated 1851 edition of Swallow Barn. Did drawings for The Blackwater Chronicle, 1853. Contributed to Harper’s New Monthly Magazine, 1853.
Did series of articles, entitled “North Carolina Illustrated” for Harper’s, 1857, “A Winter in the South,” 1857-1858, “A Summer in New England,” 1860-1861.
Served in Topographical Corps as assistant adjutant general and member staffs of Generals McClellan, Banks, Pope, and Hunter. Became colonel 3d West Virginia Cavalry.
Resigned, 1864. Brevetted brigadier general, 1865.
Contributed series of articles “Personal Recollections of the War by a Virginian” to Harper’s, 1866-1868. United States consul general in Mexico City, 1879.
